What Is a Discord Bio?
Where Is the Discord Bio
The Discord bio is officially called About Me. It is the text field that appears on your profile card when someone clicks your username or avatar anywhere on Discord.
To find it:
- Desktop: User Settings (⚙️) → Profiles → About Me
- Mobile: Tap your avatar → Edit Profile → About Me
Your About Me is visible to every user who clicks your profile in any server, in DMs, and in the member list. It is the single most-seen piece of text you control on Discord. For official profile options, see Discord Support on profile customization.
Discord Bio Character Limit (190)
The About Me field is capped at 190 characters. This limit counts everything:
| Element | Character Cost |
|---|---|
| Letter or number | 1 |
| Space | 1 |
| Line break | 1 |
| Standard Unicode symbol (✦ ╰ ꒰) | 1 |
| Standard emoji (🌸 🎮) | 2 |
| Compound emoji (🏳️🌈 👨👩👧) | 3-7 |
| Markdown asterisks (``) | 1 each |
Important: Discord Nitro does not increase this limit. 190 characters applies to every user, free or paid. For a complete breakdown of every Discord character limit, see our Discord Character Limit guide.
Track your count live while writing with DigiToolVault's Discord Bio Maker it shows remaining characters as you type and previews the result on a real profile card.
Discord Bio vs Discord Status
People confuse these constantly. They are three different fields:
| Field | Where It Shows | Limit | How to Set |
|---|---|---|---|
| About Me (bio) | Profile card when clicked | 190 chars | Settings → Profiles |
| Custom Status | Under your name in member list | 128 chars | Click avatar → Set Custom Status |
| Display Name | Next to your avatar everywhere | 32 chars | Settings → Profiles |
Your bio is the long one. Your status is the short line that often includes an emoji and can be set to expire after a set time.
How to Set Your Discord Bio
Desktop Step by Step
- Click the gear icon (⚙️) next to your username, bottom-left
- In the left sidebar, click Profiles
- Make sure User Profile tab is selected (not Server Profiles)
- Scroll to the About Me box
- Type or paste your bio watch the character counter below the box
- Click Save Changes at the bottom
If the Save Changes button does not appear, you have not made a change yet or you are over the 190-character limit.
Mobile Step by Step
iOS and Android:
- Tap your avatar in the bottom-right corner
- Tap Edit Profile
- Tap the About Me field
- Type or paste your bio
- Tap Save in the top-right
Mobile tip: Pasting symbol-heavy bios works better if you copy from a notes app rather than directly from a webpage some mobile browsers alter spacing during copy.
Per-Server Bio Guide
With Discord Nitro, you can set a different About Me for each server:
- Go to any server
- Right-click your own name in the member list (or tap it on mobile)
- Select Edit Server Profile
- Set a server-specific About Me, avatar, banner, and display name
- Save
Each server profile has the same 190-character limit. Without Nitro, your global About Me shows in every server.
Discord Bio Codes Symbols and Formatting
"Bio codes" usually means Unicode symbols and Discord's markdown syntax. Here is what actually works.
Unicode Symbols That Work
These render correctly on desktop, iOS, and Android. Copy any of them directly.
Stars and sparkles
✦ ✧ ⟡ ✩ ★ ☆ ✴ ❇ ⋆ ✵ ✶ ✷
Arrows and flow
→ ➤ ↳ ⟶ ╰┈➤ ⇢ ➜ ❯ ›
Dividers and lines
── ─── ━━ ┄┄ ┈┈ ⎯⎯ ꒷꒦꒷
Brackets and frames
꒰ ꒱ ⟨ ⟩ 「 」 【 】 ˗ˏˋ ˎˊ˗
Soft decorators
˚₊ ₊˚ ‧₊˚ ⌇ ⌑ ❧ ˖ °. .°
Boxes
╔ ═ ╗ ║ ╚ ╝ ┌ ─ ┐ │ └ ┘ ▓ ▒ ░
Every symbol above costs 1 character the same as a letter. Use them deliberately, because symbols consume your 190-character budget without carrying information. Browse the full Unicode Character Database if you need more glyphs.
Box Formatting Codes
Box layouts look striking but are expensive. Here is the real cost:
╔══════════════╗
║ your text ║
╚══════════════╝Cost: approximately 50 characters just for the box leaving only ~140 for content.
A cheaper alternative that reads just as cleanly:
── ✦ your text ✦ ──Cost: approximately 12 characters.
For more box and border designs with character counts, see our Discord Bio Layout guide.
Divider Symbols
Dividers separate sections of your bio visually:
| Divider | Characters | Look | ||
|---|---|---|---|---|
| · | 1 | name · pronouns | ||
| \ | 1 | name \ | pronouns | |
| / | 1 | name / pronouns | ||
| ── | 2 | name ── pronouns | ||
| ꒷꒦꒷ | 3 | soft wave divider | ||
| ✦ | 1 | name ✦ pronouns |
The middle dot (·) is the most efficient divider one character, reads cleanly, renders everywhere.
How to Center Text in Discord Bio
The honest answer: Discord has no centering function in the About Me field. There is no markdown code, no HTML, no CSS, and no hidden setting that centers bio text. All bio text is left-aligned.
What people actually do visual centering with spaces:
✦ name ✦
pronouns · age
dms openYou manually add leading spaces to push text rightward, creating the appearance of centering.
Three problems with this approach:
- Each space costs 1 character from your 190 budget
- Discord's profile card width differs between desktop and mobile what looks centered on desktop looks off on a phone
- Different font rendering across devices shifts alignment
A better approach: use symmetrical symbols on both sides instead of spaces:
✦ name ✦
── pronouns ──
✧ dms open ✧This reads as balanced on every device and costs fewer characters than padding spaces.
Preview how your alignment actually looks before saving using DigiToolVault's Discord Bio Maker.
How to Add a Hyperlink to Discord Bio
Can You Add Links to Discord Bio
Yes URLs in your About Me become clickable automatically. Paste a URL and Discord renders it as a clickable link for anyone viewing your profile.
Working examples:
- `yoursite.com`
Both forms work. Discord detects the URL pattern and makes it clickable without any special syntax.
Markdown Hyperlinks Test Before Relying On It
Discord's markdown supports `text` syntax in chat messages and embeds. Whether it renders in the About Me field has been inconsistent across Discord client versions, and sources disagree on current behaviour. See Discord's markdown formatting docs for the official syntax reference.
Test it yourself in 30 seconds:
- Put `my site` in your About Me
- Save
- Click your own profile to view the card
- If you see my site as clickable text it works on your client
- If you see the raw `my site` text it does not
If it does not work: use a bare URL instead. It costs more characters but is guaranteed to function for every viewer on every platform.
Using a Link-in-Bio Tool
The 190-character limit makes multiple links impractical three URLs alone can consume 90+ characters, leaving almost nothing for actual content.
The solution: one short link that routes to everything.
Instead of:
`youtube.com/@yourname twitch.tv/yourname twitter.com/yourname` (approximately 60 characters, no room left)
Use:
`linktr.ee/yourname` (18 characters, links to all of them)
Popular options: Linktree, Beacons, Carrd, Bio.link. Most have free tiers. Set up your links there, then paste the single short URL into your About Me.
Workarounds for Bio Links
- Use the shortest URL form. Drop `https://` and `www.` where possible `github.com/you` works and saves 11 characters over `https://www.github.com/you`.
- Use a URL shortener for long links. A 60-character YouTube playlist URL becomes an 18-character short link.
- Put the link last. If you run out of characters, the link is easier to trim or shorten than your actual content.
- Use Discord Connections instead. Settings → Connections lets you link Spotify, Steam, Xbox, YouTube, Twitch, and more. These appear on your profile card without consuming any of your 190 characters. For platform links specifically, this is strictly better than putting URLs in your bio.
Discord Bio Fonts and Styling
Unicode Font Styles That Work
Discord does not support custom fonts but Unicode includes alternate character sets that look like different fonts and render on any device:
| Style | Example | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bold (Unicode) | 𝗻𝗮𝗺𝗲 | Works everywhere |
| Italic (Unicode) | 𝘯𝘢𝘮𝘦 | Works everywhere |
| Script | 𝓷𝓪𝓶𝓮 | May not render on older Android |
| Gothic | 𝖓𝖆𝖒𝖊 | Works on most devices |
| Monospace | 𝚗𝚊𝚖𝚎 | Works everywhere |
| Small caps | ɴᴀᴍᴇ | Works everywhere |
| Double-struck | 𝕟𝕒𝕞𝕖 | Works on most devices |
Important: these are separate Unicode characters, not formatting. They cannot be searched, screen readers may not read them correctly, and some cost more than 1 character each. Use them for a name or heading line, not your entire bio.
Generate any of these free at DigiToolVault's Font Generator type your text, pick a style, copy, paste.
Bold Text in Discord Bio
Discord markdown works in the About Me field:
`this text becomes bold`
Character cost: 4 extra characters for the asterisks. Real bold rendering, searchable, accessible.
Versus Unicode bold (𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱): no asterisk cost, but each character may cost more than 1 toward your limit and is not searchable.
For a single word or short line, markdown is more efficient. For a styled name that must look distinct, Unicode works better.
Italic Text in Discord Bio
`this text becomes italic`
Cost: 2 extra characters.
Other markdown that works in About Me:
- `__underline__` (4 extra chars)
- `~~strikethrough~~` (4 extra chars)
- `` `inline code` `` (2 extra chars)
According to Discord's markdown documentation, these same formatting rules apply across Discord's text fields.
Discord Bio Hacks and Tips
How to Make Bio Longer
The honest answer: you cannot bypass the 190-character limit. It is enforced server-side by Discord. Every "character limit bypass" method circulating online either does not work, stopped working after a client update, or risks your account under Discord's Terms of Service.
What actually gives you more usable space:
| Technique | Characters Saved |
|---|---|
| Use · instead of - as divider | 2 per divider |
| Drop `https://www.` from URLs | 11 per URL |
| Use & instead of and | 3 per use |
| Remove trailing closing symbols | 1-3 per line |
| Use `dms open` not `my dms are open` | 7 |
| Use Discord Connections for platform links | 20-40 per link |
| Replace 2-char emoji with 1-char Unicode symbol | 1 per symbol |
The biggest win: Discord Connections (Settings → Connections) display Spotify, Steam, Xbox, YouTube, and Twitch on your profile card using zero of your 190 characters.
How to Center Bio Text
Covered in detail in the formatting section above. Short version: true centering does not exist. Use symmetrical symbols rather than padding spaces it costs fewer characters and holds alignment across devices.
Best Symbols for Discord Bio
If you only remember five symbols, make them these:
| Symbol | Use |
|---|---|
| · | middle dot most efficient divider |
| ✦ | star works everywhere, clean look |
| ── | line divider clear section break |
| ╰┈➤ | flow arrow adds structure to list lines |
| ˚₊ | soft decorator aesthetic without clutter |
All five render correctly on desktop, iOS, and Android, and each costs 1 character.
